Spot the milky way, planets and shooting stars
Stargazing wadi rum
āWhen was the last time you saw a sky full of stars? In Wadi Rum we are privileged to see this almost every night! We cannot wait to share this magical experience with you. We will create the best circumstances for you to stargaze. You can stargaze from the camp or cave. And we also offer a full stargazing experience with a professional astronomer (only available for groups).
Stargazing at the campsite
āStargazing at the camp is possible if you book an overnight in the camp. At the beginning of the evening there will still be some lights at the camp. After dinner we dim the lights to create the perfect environment for stargazing. You can take a mattrass and lay down in the sand. Or you can join us at the common area outside, where we stargaze together. When it is cold, we will make a campfire and you can also use the blankets to keep you warm.
Stargazing night tour
If you want to experience stargazing in a remote area, but still want the comfort of sleeping in the camp, then you can book a stargazing tour of 2 hours. After dinner, our local guide will take you on a stargazing experience in a remote area. Far away from the lights of the camps and the village. Lay down around the campfire on a mattrass under a warm blanket, with Bedouin tea and some sweets and just enjoy the silence and the view. Good chance you will spot a shooting star.
20 JOD per person
Stargazing at the cave
For an even better stargazing experience, you can book a night in the cave. We will take you to a remote area, far into the white desert. There won’t be any lights around, we will be far away from the lights of the camps and the village. After some dinner made on the campfire, you have the whole night to stargaze. The longer you are there, the better your eyes get used to the dark. In the remote area you have the best chance to spot the Milky way and see shooting stars, since you are in a wide, open field. The most spectacular part of the night is sleeping under the star and waking up to the sunset.
Stargazing with an astronomer
What better place to learn about astronomy, than right under the stars? This experience takes place in the remote White Desert, far away from light pollution. Our astronomer will take you on a journey through the sky where you will learn about the constellations, the zodiacs, the mythology behind them, the stars, and how to navigate them. They will take you deep into space and talk about nebulas, clusters, supernovas, galaxies, and the universe. You even have the chance to use the telescope to spot objects like the moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Andromeda and much more. It is a super interesting night where you learn a lot, but we will also have a lot of fun. You will definitely learn some new terms, but we will make sure that everything is explained in an easy way for everyone to understand it.

what are the best conditions for stargazing?
If you are planning a stargazing experience in Wadi Rum, you want the best conditions to get the most out of your experience. When looking for the right night, these are some important factors:
-
Moon: Look at the lunar cycle and the position of the moon. The stars are less visible when there is a full moon, because the light shines too brightly
-
Transparency: You need a clear sky without humidity and dust (in the wintertime there can be sandstorms in the desert)
-
Eyes: Let your eyes adapt to the dark. Take your time, close your torch, and don’t use your phone. It takes about 30 minutes for your eyes to get adjusted to the dark.
-
Red light: If you want to use a torch, use one with a red torchlight. And if you want to use your phone, activate the red screen.
-
Pollution: No light pollution. Look for a place in a remote area with no town or village close by.
-
Sun: Sun needs to be set. The evening is too early for the best stargazing experience, wait until night.
-
Season: Winter, spring and fall have longer and brighter nights. Cold nights usually have clear skies.
-
Stargazing app: If you don’t have an astronomer with you, download the Skyview app. It will show you popular stars and constellations, even when you are offline.
-
Meteor showers: Check the best dates for meteor showers, also taking into account the factors mentioned above.
